Ingredients
6–8 medium apples (Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar, plus 1 tablespoon for topping
1/4 cup all-purpose flour, plus 2 tablespoons for topping
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
For the Topping:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
Evenly pour the melted butter over the apples in the baking dish.
In the same mixing bowl (no need to wash!), whisk together the topping ingredients: 1 1/4 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Pour in the milk and the melted butter. Stir until just combined. The batter will be thick.
Drop spoonfuls of the topping batter over the apples, spreading it as evenly as possible.
Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar over the topping.
Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Other apple varieties like Granny Smith can be used, but a mix of tart and sweet apples is recommended for best flavor.
Ensure apples are cut into relatively uniform slices for even cooking.
