Description

Transform humble green cabbage into a gourmet comfort food masterpiece. This bake features tender, sautéed cabbage mixed with savory smoked turkey bacon, aromatic garlic, and a rich, creamy sauce. Topped with a generous layer of smoked Gouda and a crispy breadcrumb crust, it offers the perfect balance of earthy flavors and smoky indulgence. Whether serving as a hearty side or a wholesome vegetarian-friendly base (by omitting the turkey bacon), this dish is guaranteed to be a hit at any dinner table.

Ingredients

Scale

1 large head green cabbage, cored and chopped into 1-inch chunks
6 slices smoked turkey bacon, diced
2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 yellow onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your baking dish lightly with olive oil.
Cook the diced smoked turkey bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 5 minutes until crispy; remove bacon but keep the drippings.
Add the diced onions to the skillet and sauté for 3 minutes until translucent.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and toss frequently for 6–8 minutes until softened.
In a small bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
Transfer the cabbage mixture to the baking dish.
Pour the cream mixture over the cabbage and sprinkle with half of the smoked Gouda.
Top with the crispy turkey bacon, the remaining cheese, and the breadcrumbs.
Bake for 20 minutes until bubbling and golden, then let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven to maintain the crispy breadcrumb topping. For a lighter version, swap heavy cream for half-and-half or Greek yogurt.
