A crowd-pleasing balance of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors, these tarts are quick to assemble and sure to impress your guests at any dinner party or weekend brunch.

Ingredients

Scale

1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (non-alcoholic)
4 oz soft goat cheese, crumbled
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
1 egg (for egg wash)
2 strips crispy turkey bacon, crumbled (optional)
Salt and cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 25–30 minutes until deep golden brown and jammy.
Stir in balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper, then remove from heat.
Roll out the puff pastry and cut into 12 even squares; place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Prick the center of each square with a fork, leaving a half-inch border.
Spoon the onion mixture into the center of each square, topping with goat cheese and turkey bacon if desired.
Brush the pastry edges with a whisked egg wash.
Bake for 12–15 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
Sprinkle with fresh thyme before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes to restore the pastry’s crispiness. You can prepare the onion mixture well in advance to save time on the day of your event.
