Description

Achieve the ultimate diner-style experience at home with this Classic Smash Burger. By pressing ground beef patties onto a scorching hot skillet, you create a deep, caramelized crust while keeping the interior juicy. Paired with a creamy, tangy signature special sauce and served on butter-toasted brioche buns, this meal is faster than any drive-thru and perfect for a quick, mouthwatering weeknight dinner that the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale

1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
4 brioche buns
4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon butter
Salt and black pepper to taste
Optional: shredded lettuce, thin onion slices, tomato

Instructions

In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, mustard, and garlic powder; refrigerate until ready to use.
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently roll them into loose balls without overworking the meat.
Melt butter in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat and toast the bun halves cut-side down until golden; set aside.
Increase skillet heat to medium-high and place beef balls in the pan, ensuring not to crowd them.
Use a stiff metal spatula to press down firmly on the balls until patties are 1/2 inch thick.
Season the patties generously with salt and pepper.
Sear for 2-3 minutes until a dark, caramelized crust forms.
Flip the patties, place a slice of cheese on each, and cook for another 1-2 minutes until melted.
Spread the special sauce on the toasted buns and assemble the burgers with your desired toppings.

Notes

Do not over-handle the meat when forming the balls, as this keeps the patties tender. Use a heavy-bottomed cast-iron skillet for the best sear. If cooking for a crowd, work in batches to keep the pan temperature high enough to achieve that perfect crispy crust.
